FAQ
Here are some very frequently asked questions. Please feel free to email or call if you have a question that is not answered here.
What do I need to bring with me?
- An exercise mat-I recommend going to an outdoor/camping store and purchasing a mat that you would put under your sleeping bag. They are soft, durable and you won’t mind getting them dirty!
- Water!
- A towel (this could also work if you don’t have a mat)
- Wear sunscreen
- DON’T WEAR YOUR NICE CLOTHES TO BOOTCAMP! (because that will inevitably be the day we end up in the dirt…)
- Consider wearing “weight-lifters” gloves (the fingers are cut out). There are times when your hands will be on concrete or a park bench, and the gloves keep your hands comfy!
What kind of clothes and shoes should I wear?
It’s a good idea to dress in a layered fashion. You will get very warm as we begin the workout, so wear clothes that properly wick your sweat. Clothing made with Coolmax, I’ve found, works best. I advise against wearing cotton clothing because it doesn’t wick your sweat, tends to get heavy when wet and makes you cold once you begin to cool down. Other recommended items for September and October (when it may start cooling off a little) are:
- beanie
- head band/ear warmers
- gloves
- thin, long sleeved shirt
- wind-breaker
- running tights
I have my old sneakers from high school, will that be good enough for shoes?
If that just described your shoe situation, please reconsider! You will want a new-ish running shoe with the soles intact. While it’s not a “running” bootcamp, you will be moving your booty from one spot to the next…so make sure those shoes will do the job!
Should I eat before a workout? If so, what?
Your blood sugar is already low in the morning after “fasting” for 8-10 hours, so if you eat nothing before our early morning work, it will drop even lower. If you’ve ever experienced light-headedness, nausea, dizziness, or just plain low energy during your workout, then you’ve experienced low-blood sugar.
You need at least a little something before your workout so that you can get the most out of the time spent in the session. If you’re too busy being dizzy and need to sit down because you’re nauseas, you’ve blown an opportunity to increase your body’s fitness and strength. Here are some ideas below. Everybody is different. Play with different combos and amounts until you find one that’s right for you.
- ½ of a banana, maybe add a few almonds
- ½ of a container of yogurt
- a piece of toast with or without peanut/almond butter
- a small glass of juice diluted with water
- If you’re sugar sensitive: small scoop of whey protein mixed with almond milk or water
Any of these will fuel your body with the appropriate carbohydrates before your workout and keep you from experiencing lightheadedness or nausea. I also suggest bringing water. You should drink at least one full bottle during the workout, and one immediately after the workout.
